BIO Sylvan entered the Army in October of 1942 and was discharged from Camp Grant, Illinois in November of 1945. He did basic training at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. His military occupation was Auto Mechanic (014) after 12 weeks in motor school. He qualified as Marksman W/Rifle. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was with Battery 691 Fa Bn. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the American Theatre Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon W/2 Bronze Battle Stars, Service Stripe, Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.
