TIETJE, VERNON J.

BIO: Vernon did his training at Great Lakes Naval Station, Illinois. He became a Seabee and trained at Saipan, and Davisville, Rhode Island. He was attached to the 121st Seabee Battalion. While in the service he attained the rank of Seaman 1st Class and served in the Pacific. Vernon received the WWII Victory Medal. One memorable event was shipping out to Tokyo on the USS Azalea. A bad storm hit and blew the ship 500 miles off course. There were only enough life jackets for the crew , so they locked the men in the hold. If the ship would have gone down, approximately 131 servicemen would have gone down locked in the hold.
